How to control anger?

Anger is a normal, healthy emotion, neither good nor bad. Like any emotion, it conveys a message, telling you that a situation is upsetting, unjust, or threatening.

So, while it’s perfectly normal to feel angry when you’ve been mistreated or wronged, anger becomes a problem when you express it in a way that harms yourself or others.

Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other to die.

Take a mental escape

When you realize that you are getting aggressive, just pause for a while and control your thoughts towards a mental escape. Taking things lightly can work a great deal. You have to give less importance to issues that don’t require the energy you are putting in. Taking a mental escape is just switching off your mind for a while to avoid overthinking on the issue that is making you angry. Just try not to think about anything and give space to yourself.

Move yourself out of your mind and take a healthy escape from the current situation.

Repeat a mantra

Chant prayers, do japa or just tell yourself that it is okay and take a deep breath to calm the anger. Self-talking can really help if what you are feeding yourself is positive. Otherwise whatever spiritual religious path you follow, try to do jaap of the holy power and feel the energies flowing. If you aren’t following any spiritual path, repeat positive words to yourself like, “Inhale power!”, “Peace within!”, etc.

Energies play an important role when your heart and mind is responding. When things had gone wrong, you felt the temper flowing in your veins. To nullify those negative energies, you need to put something positive in place and then surrender to neutralize.

Listen to music

Music works as a therapy when you aren’t yourself lately. it helps to soothe your soul and calm your mind, distracting it from toxic thoughts. Listening to some positive lyrics and soothing  music can deviate you from the reason of your temper or bad mood. Music and any form of art is a vent to feelings and the genre of the music is subjective. Whatever makes you comfortable and makes you feel good is fine. Learning to play an instrument or to sing helps you even better.

Practice empathy

Sometimes the main problem is that we don’t understand the situation the other person is facing. we should analyze from a third eye view and try to step into other’s shoes. For an immediate response, the things are being visualized from our own vision and we blame the situations, time and people. But when we take a moment and try to understand the whole scenario from start to end with all its perceptions and behaviours, we’d come to a conclusion which would be different from what you had thought in the start.

Don’t hold yourself back from practising empathy and letting the other person know that you feel them and understand their point of vision and role.

Talk to a friend

Talking to a friend or a family member who understands you is the immediate step you can take when you find yourself in a bad mood. They will give you a third vision to solve the situation. Even if they don’t come up with a solution, they will listen to you with open ears and make you feel that you are the heart and are important to them. Once you realize that you have good people around who care about you, it will always make you tranquil and calm.

Do meditation and Yoga

Meditation and yoga help to calm your mind and control your aggressiveness so that you can practice a mindful life and manage your thoughts.  Since, temper is an emotion that emerges instantaneously and spontaneously when triggered, unlike most of the other emotions. So, in that sense, it is indeed very frightening, especially for people around you. This is where meditation has a crucial role to play. Interestingly, if you are aware (which is what meditation does to you, initially increases your awareness) of it, then with the increase of this awareness anger starts disappearing.

Get a good sleep

Irregular and insufficient sleep is a major reason for irritation and bad temper. You don’t even understand what is the issue until you have a good nap and wake up better and happy. It is very important to ensure that you are taking a good sound sleep to better control your emotions. The mind also needs rest, especially when you are overthinking a lot of negative issues and situations. Sleep will give a break from those stormy thoughts and will help you revive better.

When you start getting upset about something, take a moment to think about the situation. Ask yourself:

  • How important is the seriousness of things?
  • Is it really worth getting angry about it?
  • Is it worth ruining the rest of my day?
  • Is my response appropriate to the situation?
  • Is there anything I can do about it?
  • Is taking action worth my time?

You will have the answer to everything once you finish questioning yourself with an open mind. Anger can be bad and even worse if not controlled timely.

Control anger before it controls you
