Most people say that they love sleeping because dreams are better than reality.

They just want to say that sleeping gives them peace because they don’t have to struggle with their overthinking and harsh reality at that time. They don’t want to wake up as sleep is the best escape for them.

So does sleep really help you in your mental illnesses?

Slumber and mental health are closely related. Infact, there is always an effect in the sleeping patterns when in stress. Either you’ll experience insomnia and would be turning heads throughout nights or you’ll go sub conscious for much longer hours if you are facing extreme stress in  your life, spending days overthinking or are unable to handle your toxic unproductive thoughts.

Sleep deprivation can leave you feeling irritated and mentally exhausted. In the long run, conditions of insomnia are linked to a number of unfavourable health consequences, including heart diseases, type 2 diabetes and depression. Improper sleep is both a symptom and a cause of mental illness.

Few things you can do to ensure proper sleep-:

Limit slumber

Sleeping is good for the mind and body but that doesn’t mean that oversleeping is healthy too. Sleeping too much can have an effect on your ability to fall or stay asleep at night. Short power naps of 20 to 30 minutes can help you regain your energy without interrupting your nightly sleep.

Establish a routine

Maintain a night routine and stick by it. That routine should include habits that bring you rest to your physical and mental health and should not hamper your bedtime peace and relaxation. Repeat these routines every night to help set the mood for a perfect sound sleep.

Turn off or silent your devices

Try setting limits on your digital usage, especially before your sleeping time. Take a walk or read a book if you want to do something but don’t trouble your eyes with radiation. Your mind wouldn’t be able to relax and it will continue working. For an effective rest to your body, your mind needs to be calm too. Silent your devices or maybe switch them off when you go to bed.

Don’t take sleep as an escape to skip reality, but surely take it as a self-care thing to ensure better mental health. A sound sleep every night is what can do wonders to your physical and mental health and would keep a lot of stress away by keeping your mind calm.
